Option 2.9: How can human vision be enhanced?

In this option students observe the behaviour of light, investigate reflection and refraction, and apply these concepts to the operation of cameras, lenses, telescopes, microscopes and the human eye.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to apply a ray model of light and the concepts of re reflection and refraction to explain the operation of optical instruments and the human eye, and describe how human vision can be enhanced.

Behaviour of light

General properties of light
Until the middle of the 1800's, the generally accepted theory of light was the particle picture. In the late 1800's the particle picture was replaced by the wave theory of light. This was because certain phenomena associated with light, namely refraction, diffraction and interference, could only be explained using the wave picture.
